As always The Something Else! Intro gets us going... As an old fan of both Material and Weather Report "Cucumber Slumber (Fluxus Mix)" by Material featuring Wayne Shorter (of Weather Report) grabbed my ear the first time I heard it many years ago and I'm happy to share it with you! I've only recently come into knowledge of the following track, although both of the main people responsible are known to me. Larry Levan of Paradise Garage fame remixed "Seventh Heaven" by Gwen Guthrie, who's biggest hit was "Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But the Rent." Larry was known for being obsessive about sound and his studio budgets would reflect it -- much to the chagrin of the record labels requesting his services. This track shows that ultimately, it was worth it. "Give The Drummer Some feat. Real Live Show" by Nickodemus is a tribute to great drummers & percussionists who are responsible for us dancing to some great music over the years. My favorite part of the whole song is at the end when they give a shout-out to Nappy G (formerly of Groove Collective) ...who also happens to be playing on the track. "Let Me Love You (Bugz In The Attic Bruk Vox Mix)" by Bunny Mack is given that "West London" vibe that the Bugz are known for including some nice percussion. Their new album Got The Bug 2 features a dub version of this track along with other alternate versions of tunes and a few new things. Speaking of new, "Dream Merchant (GIT Beats Remix)" by Wayward Saints is the new project that Presto of Concrete Grooves is part of. Wayward Saints expands the sound outward from the hiphop that Presto was known for previously. "Come On Come On" feat. Li'Shaw (Joe Claussell Sacred Rhythm Suite Version) by Scott Hardkiss is a nice soulful house track given the rhythm refix that only Joe Claussell can do... While we're on the subject of unique remixers, "If 9 Was 6" by Prince Paul really sounds more like a remix of the Axiom Funk feat. Bootsy Collins cover of Jimi Hendrix's "If 6 Was 9." "Saidisyabruklinmon (Nobwoycyantess)" by Dr. Israel w/Loop was first introduced to me via K7's Rockers Hi-Fi Dj Kicks. I believe the Rockers knew about it because of another compilation: Crooklyn Dub Consortium Vol. 1: Certified Dope. Keeping it ragga, "Under Mi Sensi (Jungle Spliff - X-Project Remix)" by Barrington Levi & Beenie Man represents a sound I miss, dancehall reggae meets jungle/drum & bass. Turn on your subwoofer for these two! We close out with one of my favorite covers of the year, "Happy" by The Bamboos. The original by Max Sedgley was a dancefloor monster and The Bamboos know a little something about getting folks dancing as well, so it's a great blend of two great tastes!
I got a CD in the mail today that you will hear some from next week--trust me, you'll like it...
