In my last post, I mentioned a fun gig at Marula Cafe. Here are a few videos from that night. Many thanks to DJ/Producer Ralph Session for grabbing this for me! Check out his stuff by clicking on his name, it links to his Bandcamp Site.
The video above is from my first night in Basel last month. I was DJing at Grenzwert Bar. For some reason, I can’t get the video to be horizontal like the linked photo…
There’s EVEN MORE content to come, so hold tight for part 3!
Back in Confederation Helvetica (BKA \”Switzerland\”) playing records. I\’d forgotten until just before I left home that it was also Sonar weekend! I\’ve been blessed to play my second Art Week in Basel, though the trip began in Geneva. A new venue for me, Le Cormoran is right on Lake Leman (BKA \”Lake Geneva\”) and I did a live stream on Instagram of my first session. It\’s a wee bit abstract as it was a last-minute idea and the goal was more to document that it happened than to film myself. Shout out to the homie Moez, who hooked me up with the session and later introduced me to the members of 47 Soul who performed that evening at Usine. Getting excited for tonight\’s session at Amber Bar in Basel!
Thanks to Natia Lee, Guille de Juan and Curtis Audiophile Cafe, I was invited to celebrate the birthday of the culture we know as Hiphop with a DJ set at their spot last Sunday 14 August! Big ups to the man like DJ Kool Herc, the first Hiphop DJ ever. Wikipedia has a page about him if you don\’t know the history. Below are some clips from the night courtesy of the hostess.
This Friday 19th of August, I\’ll be playing a fun set of \”Blacktronica\” at Mon Ami Barcelona, a social club at the top of the Born neighborhood. I\’ll definitely be playing some music I\’ve been working on, so there will be music you won\’t hear anywhere else (yet!) I\’m on from 9 til midnight. If you\’re a member, stop by and say \”Hello!\”
The following Thursday I\’ll be warming up for a big event on Friday. An event at a restaurant run by a former Techno DJ! El Gringos Gregos was kind enough to invite me to play some records at his spot. I am honored to accept and season dinner with a bit of T-Bird groove.
The very next night Friday August 26th, I debut at Donna\’s (Friday nights in Cabaret at Barcelona Edition Hotel) opening for South Africa\’s Esa Williams! It should be a great gig – the location is gorgeous, the sound, visuals and staff are great. My first exposure to Esa was the Boiler Room set below from 2017. While it\’s unquestionably dance music, his definition of that term seems to be pretty broad–like mine! Hope to see you soon at one of these gigs!
We\’ve all been locked down (except for New Zealand–good on yous!) and trolling through our online worlds, right? Well, my wife managed to find a GEM online… That time I played after the legend that is George Benson! It was here in Sitges at the Jardins Terramar Festival, thanks to some lovely people who are also fans, Oriol Borr
Radio C/C is the new home for Something Else! One of the cool things about the new venue is the DJ equipment so I can do proper DJ sets or invite guests to do the same and another is video capability!
Todd Terry. Proper legend, mostly in the House Music world, but not exclusively. Folks from NYC seem to be more complex, fortunately. Anyway, outside of fans of House his probably most known work is a remix he did for Everything But The Girl (legends of their own, but we\’re not getting into that today) and their massive hit \”Missing\” (click title for original version.) Below is what Mr Terry did that made this ETBG\’s first hit…
He\’s hosting a contest on Mixcloud for those of us who think of ourselves as DJs who play House. I can be a competitive person so it was like a magnet and paperclip… Below is the set I submitted as my entry. Enjoy and share with friends!
This Thursday (as always for the last few months) I will be doing my show Something Else! on Radio C/C from 20-22h UTC+1. At the top of this page you can hear some archived shows in the player. After the radio, I have a gig in the center of the city! First there will be a Hiphop/Jazz session at Barcelona\’s new venue Candy (c/ Escudellers, 5 Barcelona) with Blu Rum 13 featuring Ray Colom and then I go on to transition into Bunzu\’s Afro House sound provided by Bruno M &a Dr Moods. It should be a lot of fun–see you there!
So… I\’ve been doing radio at a new spot for the last few months. Still in Poble Nou, but a different setup–more DJ-oriented. Something Else! Radio is now Thursdays 8-10pm on www.RadioCC.club Last Saturday we were part of Poble Nou\’s \”Open Day\” and provided music at Espacio 88 from 10am til 10pm featuring many of the DJ from the station. I was asked to play 5pm til 6pm after Guille de Juan (Playtime) and before Big Mic (WOKSESSIONSNDS)
I\’m still eclectic as ever…
Thanks to Benji & Victor for video and audio respectively.
The latest fruit of the tree that is Vibe Select is Vibe Select Classics. This Friday we\’re taking the Vibe uptownfor a swanky get-down on Diagonal. R.D. will be in the house and I will be joined on turntables by veteran Barcelona DJs Guille de Juan & DJ Switch. Super-excited to be in Blue Boite Barcelona, a gorgeous place away from the craziness that is central Barcelona in the summer…
R.D. & I had wanted to do an urban event that represents the classier, finer elements of that scene and this venue is definitely in line with that vision.
Get your tickets HERE and we\’ll see you on the dancefloor!
I want to make it clear I am NOT complaining! …But I\’ve got another whopper weekend coming up…
As I do normally, I\’m at Dos Trece for the Brunch Sessions this Saturday (if you haven\’t tried the food there, you\’re missing out!) That will be from 1pm-5pm. If you can\’t make it, listen live here: http://mixlr.com/dostrece/
Later on, I\’m going to check out my Sitges homie, Tom Warburton\’s new live project TKWJR & Lion Sound at Absenta del Raval! I saw their first gig at La Cava Club in Sitges and it will be interesting to see how they\’ve tweaked the show for the big city… TKWJR – Production ANDREW LEEK – Programming & projections MARC AYZA – Drums
After that I\’m headed down the street for the inaugural gig of DJ AndyLoop\’sBombo Club in Barcelona! He\’s had many successful nights in Vienna with Bombo Club and now he\’s letting Barcelona in on the fun. The venue is Barts in Parallel. Highly recommended–I\’ve had a great time at every gig I\’ve gone to in that venue.
I may finally make it to Barcelona\’s daytime electronic event this Sunday, Brunch Electronik! If I go, I will be with friends Marina & Dima Studitsky. They are both super-nice people and quite funny. Moodymann & the Discos Paradiso DJs are playing, plus Jacques Greene (who Dima is looking forward to hearing.)
….But to wrap up the weekend, I\’ll be returning to Breaking Sundays at La Cava Club in Sitges again this week!
For the observant among you, I have not changed my name to \”DJ Loopnavarro\” – I\’m filling in for him. Not sure that we\’ll have the guest star-power of last week, but who knows?
