  • Roots & Fruits…

While this week\’s show doesn\’t have a real theme, there are a few related songs here & there.

\”You Ain\’t Hip\” by Don Blackman features one of the Jamaica (Queens, NYC) sessionistas (e.g., Tom Browne, Bernard Wright, Lenny White) presenting his take on the chapter & verse of the (jazz) funk.

  • What We\’re Gon\’ Do Now Is Go Back…

\"\"After all the excitement last week over Barack Obama, the new President of the United States (I do enjoy saying that!) I took a look back in time for this week\’s show. With the exception of MC Gringo\’s \”Tumborzao con Scratchy\” (featuring Dj Beware) a Germano-Brazilian baile-funk track (there are a lot of Germans in Brazil) this week\’s music full of past classics.

I start out with the surprisingly beautiful title piece from the soundtrack of \”Death Wish.\” Herbie Hancock scored Charles Bronson\’s 1974 star turn as relentless vigilante. Moloko\’s \”The Time is Now\” gets \”blissed out\” thanks to Francois K\’s dub. Speaking of dub, Black Uhuru\’s \”Shine Eye Gal\” has both the vocal and the version happening seamlessly, leading us into MC Gringo\’s \”Tamborzao Con Scratchy\” (the aforementioned baile-funk.) After that energy pump we keep it uptempo with Next Evidence\’s \”Morning Breeze\” (Dimitri from Paris Remix) and Shaun Escoffery\’s hit \”Days Like This\” (Spen & Karizma\’s Deepah Days Dub.) Digging in the crates I pulled out something by Dr. John, the Night Tripper… \”Qualified\” from In The Right Place, one of many great albums from New Orleans and the Doobie Brothers\’ \”It Keeps You Running\” featuring blue-eyed soul legend, Michael McDonald. Blue-eyed soul gets updated by Lewis Taylor from the UK on \”Whoever\” and we close with the break-a-licious Kool & The Gang\’s ode to social/ecological responsibility \”Who\’s Gonna Take the Weight?\” A funky song with a great message — Emma Goldman would be proud.
